Mysteree: Your average black cat

MystereeFormerly known as our four legged bowling ball, due to the fact that there is not a plate of food that he will not lick clean. We can no longer leave any food out and have to feed him on a regular schedule in order to keep his weight down. He is the first cat we have ever had that could not control his eating habits. When we first got him, he was what you would call, "the runt of the litter". He must not have been able to get as much nutrition as he needed and developed a mind set upon never going hungry ever again. We have even had to put the dry food in a cupboard, as he will eat a hole in the bag and graze all day long if we don't put it away.

Male Urinary Issues:
It is not uncommon for male cats to develop urinary issues due to crystals developing in the bladder. This can cause potentially deadly results if not treated properly. We experienced a recurring issue of this condition with Mysteree. One of the suggestions for treatment was to get him to take in more water each day. He has never been one to drink water, so it was reccomended by our vetrinarian to use a prescription pet food to treat his condition. This food contained more sodium (salt) prompting him to drink more water, which he did ont do. His main diet was dry kibble, which provided no additional water and he was not willing to eat canned food, which was another suggested way to treat the water intake. We finally found a few canned food flavors that he would tolerate, added additional water to the food and cut back on his dry food intake. After a couple of months we noticed that he no longer has the urinary issues and that he was dropping some weight. It has been better than three years since his last occurance of any urinary issue.

I suggest if you have a male cat suffering repeatedly with this issue:
1) cut way back on the dry food;
2)feed canned food suplemented with additional water mixed in.
